Our Story

 The Big Bloom Martha Thawngmung

Nestled in behind a line of mature cedar trees on two city lots, The Big Bloom officially got its start in 2019 in Battle Creek, MI . My then 8th grade daughter wanted to raise funds for her school’s classroom supplies and I finally listened to the strong pull to the garden I had felt for years.

We grow primarily for design work. We are probably plant snobs. The flowers we grow are those that we adore using in event design work. If we ourselves don’t love it we don’t grow it. Our favorites are the fun accent flowers like agrostemma and jewels of Opar. The tried and true staples that we look forward to each season are the numerous varieties of daffodils, peonies, garden roses, and of course, the star of the high summer garden, dahlias.

We pay attention to the environment and strive to be good stewards of the plot of earth we’ve been given to nurture. We’ve been learning about regenerative farming since we got started and are quite proud of what we have managed to cultivate. We are ramping things up and expanding to a large acreage in 2024. Woohoo peonies as far as the eye can see here we come!

So much bounty surrounds us.

The farm has blessed us with a depper way of connecting with our family, young and old, and to meet so many of life's beautiful strangers along the way.

We collaborate with our dear friend Laura Langford, farmer & owner of Marygold Meadows, to do weddings installations & whatever whimsical musings call.
